Watch: Earthquake claimed its ‘heart; now community has clawed it back

Christchurch’s Inner City East had its ‘heart’ ripped out as a result of the February 22 earthquake.

Not only did it lose much of its housing, including more than 300 bedsits for those on low incomes, but its shopping area was decimated.

Many from the old bedsit community could not afford or find low-cost housing and headed to the streets.

Those residents who did have housing lacked a central place for shopping and for gathering as a community.

They felt forgotten.

But now residents say the area has finally got its ‘heart back’.

This is how they did it.
