New chapter for Woolston Library

Woolston Community Library president Robyn Dann is all smiles with their new library.

A new community library now holds pride of place in Woolston – almost 150 years after the opening of the original building on the same site.

The new building on Ferry Rd opened last week and was an integral part of the earthquake rebuild.

It features a dedicated voluntary library, including a “snug” for children and multi-function community areas, as well as a hall and a small meeting room with external access to both sections.

Bi-fold doors open onto a courtyard, where people can read, relax or meet friends by the japanese maple tree.

Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board chairwoman Sally Buck said the new library showcases the strength of the local community, which has remained committed to rebuilding the area. “Woolston Community Library reflects the industrial heritage of the area while meeting the needs of a re-energised community,” she said.

“From books to meeting places to family-focused areas, the library offers a modern environment for making community connections and nurturing learning,” Ms Buck said.

Toilets and a shower, a parents’ room, a kitchen with a servery and a muchneeded public toilet at the front of the building complete the community facility.

The library utilises translucent material to draw natural light into the building and connect with the streetscape, courtyard and laneway.

The brick and timber exterior also pays homage to the distinctive brick of the old library, a landmark site amid the industrial character of Woolston.

Ms Buck said the opening of the library signals a milestone moment in the area’s rebuild.

“Our stunning new community library remains true to our area’s industrial roots but highlights our growth and forward-thinking approach to the next 150 years,” she said.

“It offers a welcoming space, areas for learning and opens the door to community use.

“Most importantly, it delivers a strong heart to the community of Woolston.”

The library will be open Monday to Friday from 11am to 3pm and from 10am to noon on Saturdays.
