Firefighters have extinguished a large building fire near Rolleston.
At its height nine appliances and tankers fought the fire at Diggalink, at the intersection of Weedons Ross Rd and State Highway 1, Main South Rd,
The blaze started at about 10.20am.
Four appliances and four tankers remain at the scene dampening down hotspots.
The fire is not considered suspicious, but a fire investigator is heading to the property to determine a cause, Fire and Emergency spokesman Andrew Norris said.
Christchurch Transport Operations Centre said the fire has closed Weedons Ross Rd, between Main South Rd and Manion Rd.
A nearby witness said when the fire started there was quite a lot of smoke coming from the property and the wind is “picking up”.
The MetService has predicted gale force winds for parts of Canterbury from 6am-6pm on Thursday.
Yesterday helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft were put on standby as the fire risk in Canterbury was deemed at an extreme level.
All fire permits were suspended for 48 hours as of yesterday.
