Prebbleton School’s Lucia Gale competed in an older age group to finish second at the South Island primary school tennis finals in Timaru last week.
The year 4 pupil competed in the year 6 girls singles and went unbeaten in three pool matches, including a 4-2, 2-4, 4-1 victory over No 1 seed Mya Haigh from Maori Hill School in Dunedin.
Lucia lost in the final to No 2 seed Cherry Zhou from St Andrew’s College Preparatory School 1-4, 1-4. The two singles finalists teamed up in the doubles to win the year 6 title. They defeated Mya and Charlotte Byers 6-3 in the final.
A week earlier, Lucia won the year 6 and under Canterbury primary school title. She was dominant, not dropping a single game in her three matches leading to the final, in which she defeated Cherry 4-2, 4-2. Leeston School’s Molly McKenzie and Sophia Amyes also competed in the South Island year 6 and under girls singles after making the semi-final of the Canterbury tournament. Molly finished fifth, and Sophia was seventh.
