Wifi won’t be shut off to minimise loitering

Wi-fi at the New Brighton library will not be shut off to reduce loitering and anti-social behaviour.

City council has said free wi-fi service at metropolitan, suburban and neighbourhood libraries is a service level in the current Long Term Plan and cannot be changed.

The Coastal-Burwood Community Board requested city council look into the matter following an attack on a restaurant manager from Salt On The Pier, which is adjacent to the library.

Youths often congregate in the library’s lobby after hours and use the free wi-fi.

The victim asked a group of loitering youths to move on and was held down and punched by a group of three.

The upstairs part of the restaurant can only be accessed via the lobby area. Therefore closing the foyer at night is not an option.

The city council said various possibilities for after hours access to the foyer and restaurant are being discussed with restaurant management.
