Speeding cyclists will tackle the ramps and hairpin bends of a city car park building in a new high adrenalin event.
The Car Park Cannon Ball event is brand new for Christchurch and the first of its kind in New Zealand.
The Urology Associates Car Park Cannon Ball will be held in the new Innovation Car Park in the Innovation Precinct, on the corner of Lichfield St and Madras St from 5pm on Sunday 26 November.
It is part of a world series of Car Park Cannon Ball hosted by cities in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Spain and Belgium.
The fast and furious competition will see 120 riders competing in high-speed one-on-one races from the bottom of the building up its eight floors to the roof top. Racers, including both men and women, will get two runs each.
The event is a fundraiser for Movember and men’s health. Organiser John McKenzie says it’s a cause he’s passionate about because his dad has been affected by prostate cancer. “I think men’s health is in crisis so I’m very keen to do my bit to raise money and profile for this issue.”
He’s hoping thousands of people will come along and join a roof-top party on 26 November that will be happening alongside the cycle racing. There will be burgers and beer, a DJ and band as well as prizes and giveaways.
“It’s going to be a great night. There’s been nothing like this held in an inner city environment ever. It’s going to be something pretty special with an amazing atmosphere – you don’t have to be a cyclist to come along and enjoy it. It’s a celebration of the revitalisation of the inner city and we want people to come down and be part of it.”
Corporate hospitality packages are also on sale for the night.
The Movember Foundation is a global charity raising funds towards men’s health, including prostate and testicular cancer and mental health issues.
