Hospital staff have been warned for using their work phones to play music and browse YouTube, Facebook and Tumblr.
An audit of Canterbury District Health Board staff mobile phones found 40 per cent of their work data use was not work-related.
About 10 per cent of the data was used through music streaming services Spotify and iTunes.
YouTube streaming accounted for 8 per cent of mobile data use, blogging service Tumblr for 7 per cent, and Facebook 2 per cent.
Staff have a mobile data allowance of 300MB per month. Managers will be emailed if any of their staff used more than 1.3GB of data, and a monthly report would be generated showing the “top mobile data users”.
CDHB people and capability general manager Michael Frampton said he could not say if any staff had been given an official warning over their use of the mobile phones.
He said a number of the apps had legitimate work-related uses, like presentations or training videos streamed through YouTube.
“Canterbury DHB trusts its people to use their judgement and make good decisions regarding reasonable and appropriate use of their mobile devices,” he said.
