Christchurch will be host an America’s Cup parade next Wednesday.

Emirates Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton made the announcement at the Auckland parade held on Thursday.

Soon after Mr Dalton made the announcement, Mayor Lianne Dalziel said in a written statement that the parade will be held from noon and will feature 25 members of the team.

Ms Dalziel said it would be a “huge day” in the central city.

“It’s perfect that the parade coincides with the school holidays and we really hope that people will come out in force to join in the celebrations. There will be a party atmosphere with entertainment for all,” she said.

A city council spokeswoman said it was contacted late last night with confirmation the team was interested in a parade.

Mayor Dalziel says that planning is now underway and more details about the event will be released over the next few days.

“We are delighted that the team is coming to Christchurch which has such a proud sporting record with the city having produced numerous champion sailors.”
Full details of the parade, viewing locations and transport will be made available once finalised.
