The city might be in line for a parade to celebrate Emirates Team New Zealand’s win.
After the emphatic 7-1 win over Oracle Team USA on Tuesday morning, Mayor Lianne Dalziel said she was keen to have a celebration.
“They have made the entire country proud and it would be fantastic to show our appreciation as a city,’’ said Ms Dalziel.
But what that will look like and the cost involved is still under discussion.
“We are already talking with the other parties and organisations involved, but it is too early to say if a parade or celebration will happen in Christchurch. We will confirm once we have any further information,’’ she said.
The idea has support from some city councillors.
Cr Vicki Buck said she remembered it from last time and it was “way popular”.
Cr Jamie Gough said he though a parade would be a “wonderful idea”.
“I recall taking part (as a very young child) in the parade in 1995 when we first one the Auld Mug,” he said.
Cr Glenn Livingstone said it would be good to celebrate the win locally.
“It ran under the banner Team New Zealand – it’s good to celebrate national events locally,” he said.
Cr Phil Clearwater said it would be great to have a victory parade.
“We’d love to celebrate Team New Zealand’s amazing win on the world stage,” he said.
