A diver died near Kaikoura on Sunday.
The man was diving near Goose Bay when he was brought ashore by a person he was diving with.
A woman, who was working nearby, and a local man rushed to his aide and started to perform CPR while emergency services were called.
The Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived on scene at about 1.27pm and took over the rescue efforts, but were unsuccessful in reviving the diver.
Chief fire officer for Kaikoura Ian Walker said it was an “unfortunate accident”.
“We did all we could but unfortunately he died,” he said.
