VIDEO: Hurunui Trails Trust
The wheels for a cycling route from Hurunui to Kaikoura and possibly the proposed Coastal Pacific Trail have started rolling thanks to a lottery grant.
Money from the Lottery Hurunui Kaikoura Marlborough Earthquake Relief Fund will help spur plans for the cycle route into action, and this recently released video shows how the route might look.
The proposed Hurunui Heartland Cycle Tour will take riders from Amberley through to Kaikoura along less used back country roads avoiding State Highway 1 and, as much as possible, State Highway 7.
Hurunui Trails Trustee Dr Richard McCubbin came up with the idea to promote the route after he and his wife cycled most of it.
“Having this route is a great opportunity to boost the district since the earthquakes occurred last year and will be a great asset bringing together locals and visitors,” he says.
He hopes others will follow suit and see the ‘wonderful and varied backcountry’.
The route passes through villages and communities impacted by the November 2016 earthquakes including Culverden, Waiau, Mt Lyford and Kaikoura.
