Piped up for summer school

More than 140 students took part in the southern hemisphere’s largest pipe and drumming summer school at St Andrew’s College.

The Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Association Summer School was held last week at St Andrew’s College, bring some of the best tutors in the trade to the school.

The association has been running for nearly 90 years, with 17 pipe bands in and around Canterbury taking part.

Canadian bagpiper Jack Lee, Scottish pipe-band drummer and leading drummer of the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band John Reid Maxwell were some of the tutors from around the world who travelled to the city.

Six-time winner of the Adult World Solo Drumming Championships Steven McWhirter and lead tenor of world champion  pipe band Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band Andrew Elliot also tutored at the school.
